My Philosophy on Education and Learning

I believe that developing a curriculum around children’s interests promotes fundamental motivation and stimulates their passion to learn. Each and every child has the potential to bring something unique and special to the world. I will help children to develop their potential by believing in them as capable individuals. I will assist children in discovering who they are, encouraging them to express their own opinions and develop their own ideas. I want children to grow up learning to respect, accept, and embrace the differences between each other and others. I believe my role as a teacher is to guide them, providing access to information, rather than acting as the main source of information. I want children to seek out knowledge as they learn to find answers to their own questions. They need the opportunity to discover answers for themselves and practice skills in real situations. I will teach to the individual needs of each child so that all children can learn and feel capable. I will offer curriculum that involves the interests of the children and makes learning appropriate to real life. I will provide children with access to hands-on activities and will allow them sufficient time and space to use materials that support the lesson being presented giving them opportunities for individual discovery and for them to acquire the knowledge they are after.

The Importance of Play

Child Development & Play

Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them.

Independent Play

Independent play and being alone develops self confidence in children by allowing them freedom. Freedom to test hypothesis, try new things and take healthy risks. They create ideas, learn about them self and what they like, build on developing skills and most of all they become comfortable with who they are.

Block Play

Children learn about spatial awareness when they move and arrange blocks. When children build structures and talk about them, they get a chance to use spatial vocabulary like “under”, “over”, “between”, “on top of” and “inside”. Children learn math concepts through block play, such as sorting, counting, and symmetry. Building tall block towers takes patience, concentration, and a good deal of accuracy in motor skills and coordination.

Outdoor Play

Outdoor play gives kids more advanced motor skills including coordination, balance and agility. When children are outside, they have the space to run, walk, jump, swing and throw. Hands on learning, the natural environment and loose parts in outdoor play stimulates children's senses through what they hear, touch, see and feel.

Dramatic Play

Dramatic play encourages children to role-play, which helps them learn important social skills, such as empathy. Dramatic play also encourages expressive language. Children are motivated to convey their wishes to others and speak from the perspective of their pretend roles.

Nap / Rest Time

All children in care will have a nap/rest time

Importance of Nap Time

Naps provide much needed downtime that helps the important physical and mental development that happens in early childhood. Missing a nap can lead to more anxiety, less joy and interest and a lesser understanding on how to problem solve. Napping helps children from becoming overtired, which can effect their moods and can actually make it harder for them to fall asleep at night.

Infants / Toddlers

Infants will have a safe, quiet, comfortable place to nap while in my care. They will have their own individual crib or playpen in which to rest to ensure they can have the opportunity to get the proper rest they need.

Preschoolers

Preschoolers have their nap time on a cot provided by the center. The center also provides each child with their own sheet, blankets and a pillow that is exclusively used by them & washed each week or sooner if needed. They nap in the main center areas.

Daily schedule

This is a tentative schedule of daily activities. The schedule may vary due to the individual need of the infants in my care for each given day.
